Uvas Felices

Because happy grapes must taste better than sad grapes! Uvas Felices, or ‘Happy Grapes,’ is a group from Spain whose goal is to source and produce wines from premier regions and represent the authenticity of their terroir.

The wines are produced in extremely small volume, and we were lucky to be given the opportunity to try them. You might recognize the bold blue bottle below. We previously featured the Venta las Vacas 2010 in WineCollective and Tannic. We loved this wine so much, after selling out of the 2010, we have supply of the 2011 in the online members-only Store. Don’t miss out!

Last week, Amparo Soler from VILA VINITECA visited Calgary and brought four great wines from Uvas Felices. The wines, which are imported by Bonvida Wines in Alberta, were showcased at Vero Bistro in Calgary. Mark Bata of Bonvida hosted the night, with Amparo presenting the wines.

The night started with a glass of prosecco, and several generous tapas: lamb meatball, marinated squid, and bruschetta. The formal appetizer plate was a duo of Jamon Iberico de Bellota (Bellota Iberian ham) and  tortilla de patatas tradicional (traditional Spanish omlette) with fried artichoke and olives. This was served with the 2009 La Locomotora.

20140415_191704 (1)

La Locomotora has a unique label (like all the other Uvas Felices wines). The locomotive is reflective of the transportation in the area during the 40’s to 60’s. The wildflowers represent the over 80 different species of flowers found in Rioja.

Rape con salsa romesco (monkfish with ramesco sauce) was paired with the Paisajes Valsalado. Guiso de lentejas con chorizo (lentil stew with chorizo) was served with Paisajes La Pasada. The Paisajes or “Landscape” line embraces the distinct terroir of the vineyards.

“All wines are a look at the landscape. Valsalado Landscapes brings together 4 different varieties, 57 to 60 years of age randomly planted in one hectare of clay and gravel, located in the Logroño. Landscapes La Pasada comes from a farm planted with vines of Tempranillo Briones-57 to 60-year-old on a floor of gravel and clay. Landscapes Cecias from a 2.4 farm planted with Grenache than 85 years.”   –Villa Viniteca

Yes, after 6 dishes we were quite full! Not full enough to pass on the lomo de cerdo asado con pisto manchego (roasted pork loin with pisto). Served with our favourite, Venta Las Vacas.

The dinner finished with helado de biscuit con turron de almendras (biscuit ice cream with almond nougat). The Spanish feast was a special treat to have at Vero Bistro! Keep tabs on their event calender to be sure you don’t miss out on the next one!

Don’t miss out on next year’s Uncorked!

The turnout on April 12th for the inaugural Canmore Uncorked Wine Festival was impressive! The Radisson hotel hosted the the wine festival, the finale of the 10 day long event. We were curious how many people would be attending the event, as records show ticket sales were at about 450. This is a great start, considering the conference room was packed! We are sure that next year’s festivities will require either a second night, or a larger room.

uncorked logo

The highlight of Uncorked is that tasters received a more in-depth and personal experience. With 450 attendees and over 80 different wines and spirits, there was plenty of opportunity to experience and learn about what was being poured.

20140412_205124
Only 30 minutes into the event, the room at the Radisson was full.

Criticisms? More food selection and sampling would be a great addition for future years. With the cost of entry, attendees received two food vouchers and additional samples were $3.00 each. There was a selection of charcuterie and cheese, popcorn, and a made-to-order ravioli station.

Back to the positives, there were some great producers from around the world represented and a few cocktails to shake things up! WineCollective and Tannic members might recognize some of our favourites!

3 Easter feasts & wines to pair!

With Easter right around the corner, the WineCollective team has decided to dig past the snow on the ground to the very small and patchy sections of green grass. We’re hopeful that after a festive weekend, the sun will start to shine and spring will be among us! To kick-start the bright and cheery season, we give to you several delicious recipes to boost typical Easter feasts and spring wine pairings that will absolutely bring sunshine to your table this weekend.

baked-ham-l

Brown Sugar Bourbon-Glazed Ham

For those of you that enjoy sweet, sweet ham on Easter, try this Bourbon-glazed goodness. The recipe is incredibly easily with a handful of ingredients including brown sugar, full shallot cloves and of course, Bourbon!

Wine Pairing

2012 Misha’s Limelight Riesling

From New Zealand, this Riesling has incredible balance between sweetness and acidity that will easily handle the sugar from the ham. Notes of pears, melons, white blossoms and minerality are present with a medium body that can definitely handle this filling dish.

2010 Sperling Old Vines Foch

This previously featured Maréchal Foch is sourced from 60 year old vines in Canada’s Okanagan Valley. Cherry and blueberry jam characteristics are rounded with oak and smoke notes. With the bourbon glaze, much of the rustic elements of the wine will show through and balance out the sweetness of the ham.

honey-curry-glazed-lamb-l

Honey-Curry Glazed Lamb with Roasted Grapes and Cranberries

Substantial amount of flavour from curry and honey combination. The lamb is grilled then oven baked to soak in all the juices while the roasted grapes and cranberries make for a festive topping.

Wine Pairing

2008 Charles Joguet Chenin Blanc

This wine is incredibly fresh and best served at a cool 12 degrees Celsius. Mouthwatering acidity combined with tropical notes, banana bread and honeycomb will pair delightfully with the different flavours and balance the curry spice.

2010 Kermit Lynch Côtes du Rhône

A blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, this wine has all the components necessary to pair with the lamb recipe. Minerality, dark cherries and bramble fruit are carried through the palate and generous amounts of acidity and round tannins with handle the richness of the meal.

ginger-ale-chicken-l

Ginger Ale Can Chicken

Similar to the much-loved beer can chicken, except this wine uses ginger ale, adding a whole different profile of flavour to the meat. The steam from the can creates a moist rich roasted flavour.

2012 Glen Carlou Unwooded Chardonnay

A refreshing Chardonnay that we’ve even posted an entire blog about it! High acidity meets the green orchard fruits and floral components with a creamy and velvety texture. It’ll match superbly with the ginger.

2011 Sister’s Run GSM

Recently featured, this wine is a blend of Grenache and Shiraz from Australia’s, Barossa Valley. The Shiraz will bring out the lively ginger spice. On the palate, stewed plums, blackberries and blueberries with fine tannins and nicely balanced acidity.

We hope you get to try out some of these amazing pairings and bring out some of the best in your traditional Easter feasts this weekend! If not, let us know what you enjoyed through the WineCollective.ca community, Facebook or Twitter page.

As always, feel free to contact us for more information on food pairings!

Support the care of Alzheimer’s patients with The Bellini Foundation and South by Southwest

One of WineCollective and Tannic’s go-to representatives, South by Southwest Wine Imports, is aiming to make a difference for the future of Alzheimer’s patients. Partnered with the Bellini Foundation, all funds raised in sales of the 2010 Passione e Visione will be donated towards the care of those suffering with Alzheimer’s in Alberta

SBSW_horizontal

This month, SBSW is launching a special wine from Domodimonti, a winery in Marches, Italy, owned by Dr. Francesco and his wife, Marisa Bellini. Apart from his wine expertise, Dr. Bellini, an Italian, Canadian doctor, is recognized for life changing medications not only for HIV but also, for Alzheimer’s.

Dr. Bellini is credited for the 3TC Epivir, a Hepatitis C vaccine that prevents HIV from turning into Aids. He is also known for his drug, Alzhemed, which prevents beta amyloid from forming abnormal growth in the brain that is linked to the fatal Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr.FrancescoBellini

There are over 800,000 people in Canada living with Alzheimer’s disease, a number that is projected to double by 2030.

In hopes of one day finding a cure and in the meantime caring for those suffering with Alzheimer’s, SBSW and the Bellini Foundation are donating $20 per case sold of the Passione e Visione 2010 to support the care of Albertan’s living with Alzheimers.

We would love to join SBSW in their mission by asking our members to take part in this charitable donation by purchasing Passione e Vissione through Tannic.ca. In exchange for a premium wine, your donation will help in caring for those with the disease today.

Below are SBSW’s tasting notes on this upcoming feature.

2010 Passione e Visione

Grape: Petite Verdot

Eyes: Deep ruby red

Nose: Expresses notes of violet and red berry jam, perfectly harmonized with underlying aromas of leather and spice.

Mouth: The wine is delicate and well structured on the palate without any roughness. The soft and enveloping tannins give it harmony and elegance.

Food Pairing: Decant for an hour and serve alongside barbecued lamb chops, roast duck and aged cheese.

Keep an eye out for the upcoming opportunity of purchasing the Passione e Visione on Tannic and through South by Southwest Wine Imports at local retail locations. You can expect to see the Passione e Vision in the Tannic store later this month!

Discover Naramata wines

Chances are you are familiar with the different wine regions in Canada, from BC to Nova Scotia. Within these larger regions of Fraser Valley, Okanagan Valley, Niagara, Prince Edward County and Tidal Bay, you can find smaller regions that further dictate a more specific wine style and quality. Naramata is one of these smaller regions located in the Okanagan Valley.

Map from Wines of British Columbia.
Map from Wines of British Columbia.

The Okanagan Valley is nestled in a pocket with the Shuswap and Kootenays to the north and east, and the Similkameen Valley to the west. Okanagan Valley is comprised of 11 different sub-regions with 122 licensed wineries. The Okanagan Valley produces the majority of B.C.’s wine, with “nearly 82 per cent of the total vineyard acreage in the province”- (WineBC.com)

Naramata is home to approximately 30 wineries. South of Kelowna and north of Okanagan Falls on the East bank of the Okanagan Lake, Naramata is home to many grape varietals. The soils and climate produce stunning Merlot and Pinot Noir, as well as full-bodied Pinot Gris, we like Kettle Valley’s. You can also find more unique plantings of Ehrenfelser, Pinot Blanc, and Pinotage at wineries like Lake Breeze Vineyards.

What makes Naramata wines so special? The approximate 25 kms of winding roads and undulating hills lay atop granite rich soils. The granite provides a level of minerality to the wines and also provides a heat source for the vines. The mineral rich soil absorbs heat during the day and disperses the warmth through the evening. The vines wake-up in the morning with open leaves and ready for the heat of the day. Vineyards with a western slope that face the Okanagan Lake also benefit from the additional sunlight reflected off the water. This is why you will discover fully ripened and expressive varietals such as Syrah, this far north!

A visit to Naramata is definitely worth a trip! If you are short on vacation time, you can attend the Flavours of Naramata festival being held this evening in Calgary. At the Jack Singer Concert Hall Lobby, you can sample the wines from 18 different producers while being entertained by the Deanne Matley Trio!

If you are attending the event, let us know what you thought of the wines! WineCollective would love to hear about your favourite Naramata wineries and new wines you discovered.

AER’s silent auction for United Way

WineCollective has always jumped at the opportunity to participate in various United Way fundraisers in the past. Recently, we joined Alberta Energy Regulator in their silent auction in support of United Way that focused on three areas including:

–       Helping kids be all they can be

–       Moving people from poverty to possibility

–       Building healthy people in strong communities

Towards the end of 2013, WineCollective donated a 6-Month Holiday Package, valued at $556, which was featured in the AER silent auction.  This donation included all of the bells and whistles of a typical WC gift package such as tasting notes and access to our online community of wine-lovers. We sincerely hope the highest bidder enjoys their upcoming six months of wine!

United-Way

Along with other companies and organizations who generously donated to the auction, Alberta Energy Regulator raised $19,472.98 for United Way.

Thank you to AER for hosting this very successful silent auction. We look forward to working with them and other United Way supporters in the future.

Avoid your NYE wine hangover

New Year’s Eve is the most popular day for drinking in Canada. While WineCollective only promotes safe and non-excessive drinking, we do realize that ringing in 2014 may cause excitement and over-indulgence. Unfortunately, with good times and good wine usually come horrible hangovers that will ruin any day – nevermind the first of the year. So, just in case you are the life of the party, here is what you need to avoid the dreaded wine hangover.

2014-bottle

1. Stay hydrated

Forget vino, water should be your best friend tomorrow. Make sure to stay hydrated during the day and through out the night. The wine pros at Wine Folly suggest: “With every glass of wine, drink a glass of water.”

Dehydration has the biggest affect in creating a nasty hangover. Be sure to drink a glass of water before bed, after your night of festivities.

2. Eat food and drink slowly

Starting your evening off with a rich and fatty dinner will most definitely help you out in the long run. Also, drinking a glass of milk prior to drinking can coat your stomach if your hangovers usually involve tummy aches.

Wine should be enjoyed. Don’t chug it, or involve wine in any fast-paced drinking game, unless you want a headache before the night is even over.

image_277871-hangover

3. Choose the right wine

There are a few things that influence wine hangovers including sulphites, tannins and congeners – a natural by-product of alcohol fermentation. In order to stray from morning pains choose a wine that is lower in alcohol content and low in tannins dependent on the grape varietal. Tannins are increased with thick-skinned grapes, so sipping on a Pinot Noir or Gamay may be a better option. However, tannins can also be present due to oak and production methods. If you’re looking to avoid sulphites, choose an organic or higher quality of wine as these producers use reduced levels in production.

While congeners are present in all alcohols, darker fluids tend to cause more trouble. Gin and vodka hold less, while bourbon and red wine carry the most making white wine the safer choice.

wineflu

4. Vitamins and more

Before the party begins take an all around multivitamin, Aspirin, Vitamin B6 or magnesium supplement. While these may help with body or head pains, they do not reduce alcohol in your system, so you will still experience hangover symptoms. If you’re able to open the childproof container of aspirin when you arrive home, take one before bed.

5. Don’t drink

If you know you experience painful hangovers, stay away from alcohol this NYE, or keep it to a minimum. Enjoy a glass of wine at dinner, and of course one for desert. Toast 2014 with a glass of Champagne and then call it quits. That way, you are guaranteed to enjoy January 1st from beyond your bedroom / bathroom.

uwp5 (13)-253358

New Years Eve is a night to celebrate with great food, dancing, wine and Champagne! But, above all, the team at WineCollective recommends safe travel tomorrow night. Please have a designated driver or taxi take your home safely regardless of how many glasses of wine, beer, vodka, bourbon etc. you enjoy.

Happy New Year!

WineCollective’s Wine n’ Wares

This past Friday, the women of WineCollective transformed the office into a boutique for a festive ladies night. We welcomed friends, family, wine distributors and customers for Wine n’ Wares, an evening combined all of our favourite gifts and personal pampering products into a one stop shop.

WnW3

WnW1

Friend of WineCollective, Shelly Bata filled our boardroom with fabulous Stella & Dot jewelry and accessories. While skincare and beauty products from NuCerity and Arbonne were also featured, thanks to consultants Amy Wilford and Amy Protti.

WnW6

Shelly was kind enough to offer a free draw prize, which happened to go to our NuCerity representative, Amy. She won a beautiful Stella & Dot turquoise necklace that caught her eye earlier in the evening.

WnW4

Of course, bottles were popped to pair alongside the snack spread, which even included a very fancy Cabernet Sauvignon cheese. We selected the 2010 Le Roc Blanc, a red wine blend of Syrah, Mouvedre, Grenache and Carignan that was featured in most WineCollective June 2013 packages. While light, this wine is impressively flavourful with notes of blackberries and oak. The vintage is a great companion to food; however, it can easily be enjoyed alone while trying on jewelry or sampling lotions.

WnW2

We also served the 2009 Palmadina Pinot Grigio for our white wine fans. This vintage is full bodied in its fresh and crisp flavours of grapefruit and peach and also makes a great pairing for appetizers.  You may have this Italian charm in part of your November shipment.

All of the ladies that attended Wine n’ Wares were entered in a draw for two bottles of each wine. We hope that our winner, Amanda, enjoys the gift as a thank you for attending! Both the 2010 Le Roc Blanc and 2009 Palmadina Pinot Grigio can be found in our WineCollective store for a member’s only price.

WnW5

Once again, we would like to thank all attendees and hostesses for a great evening at WineCollective. Ladies, stay tuned for future Wine n’ Wares events!

Deloitte wine tasting in support of United Way

This past month, WineCollective joined Deloitte at their offices in downtown Calgary to host a wine tasting fundraiser for United Way.

Deloitte8

Deloitte is a leading accounting firm in Canada that provides tax and financial consulting since being founded 1845.  Apart from their professional services, Deloitte is a great supporter of United Way as they set up an array of events and fundraisers for the non-profit organization. Over the past 13 years, Deloitte’s worldwide group and staff have raised over $194 million for United Way. Deloitte’s Calgary offices have done numerous fundraisers for United Way this year including a chilli cook-off and throwing pie at one another’s faces.

Deloitte7

Fortunately for WineCollective, many of Deloitte’s Canadian staff are club members. So when Senior Manager, Matt McMillan asked us to help with their wine tasting event, we were happy to take part!

Deloitte5

WineCollective’s Amber brought 10 wines to the tasting, which she arranged in specific order for easy tasting (light to full body). From there, the Deloitte staff was free to sample the wines! Amber and I were available for any questions about the wine and WineCollective tasting cards were supplied for tasters to follow along.

Deloitte1

The following wines were brought to the tasting.

  1. 2011 Benjamin Bridge Nova 7
  2. 2012 Monte da Ravaqueria Serrana
  3. 2011 Colle dei Venti Pecorino
  4. 2010 Recuerdo Torrontes
  5. 2008 Deep Sea Chardonnay
  6. 2010 Le Roc Blanc
  7. 2010 Brusco dei Barbi
  8. 2010 Versado Malbec
  9. 2010 Casa Viva Carmenere
  10. 2011 Suiker Bossie Pinotage

Screen shot 2013-10-28 at 12.46.46 PM

Deloitte’s staff favourited the Suiker Bossie Pinotage, as well as Benjamin Bridge’s Nova 7 and Le Roc Blanc.

We were happy to share our support of United Way with Deloitte and hope the participating staff enjoyed every wine! In all, Deloitte raised roughly $1,700 through the tasting. You can call WineCollective today for more details on your own wine tasting event or fundraiser.

Rocky Mountain Festival Favourites

This past weekend, on Oct. 18, Amber and I took part in the 16th annual Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival (RMWFF) in Calgary. While you may not have seen us working a booth, we did get the chance to wander the BMO Centre in search of wine, food, beer, vodka and some of our favourite WineCollective supporters.

RM7

This year, exhibitors included 162 wineries, 47 breweries, a variety of spirit distillers and plenty of food choices. There was no shortage of samples for the hundreds of guests that began filing in at 5 p.m.

RM1

Glassware Creations by Laurie

Many of the wine merchants and representatives that help WineCollective find their monthly-featured wines were able to share some of their favourites with Amber and myself. The 2011 Trivento Amado Sur Malbec is an impressive blend of Malbec, Syrah and Bonarda. We found this vintage to be forward with fresh fruit with notes of smoke and vanilla and overall, very smooth. This Malbec has also received 90 points from Robert Parker. We’re keeping this one on our radar for WC packages in the future.

RM8

Trivento Bodegas y Viñedos. Mendoza, Argentina

With plenty of food around the festival, we made some quick stops to some favourite vendors with impressive displays. The friendly staff at Sunterra Market featured a Chipotle Beef Brisket, with pineapple mango salsa and bourbon peppercorn sauce, with Parisian macarons for dessert. Kinjo Sushi and YYC famous owner, Peter Kinjo, were happy to share a variety of sushi that cleansed our palates for ice wine and vodka tastings that followed.

RM6

RM3

Fluid Imports made us a special treat from Double Cross Vodka (a favourite among WineCollective staff). Infused with white wine and cranberry, this cocktail was deliciously dangerous. The 7x-distilled Double Cross Vodka is incredibly smooth, pure, clean and crisp.

RM5

RM4

Fluid Imports and the Double Cross vodka and cranberry cocktail

Our last stop took us to Vintage West, representative of Cameron Hughes. While we didn’t get to taste the upcoming Tannic.ca feature, Lot 260, we were able to try the Ogio Prosecco, a sweet and very popular sparkling wine.

Cameron Hughes 2007 Lot 260, is a classic Barolo wine, made from Nebbiolo grapes in the Piedmont region of Italy. This wine is truly exceptional with flavours of strawberry, cherry and plum with fresh tobacco and balsamic notes. It is made and classified under DOCG and has received 93 points from Wine Spectator. Tannic members will be able to purchase the vintage this week.

RM2

Overall, the RMWFF appeared to host another successful festival. If you were able to attend, we would love to hear about your experience and favourites among the wine and food samples. Fortunately, if you were unable to make it to Calgary’s event, Edmonton is hosting their very own festival this upcoming weekend.

We would like to thank all the food exhibitors as well as Fluid Imports, Lanigan & Edwards Wine Merchants, Vintage West Wine Marketing and Select Wine Merchants for the generous samples. We look forward to featuring some of our finds in future WineCollective packages and attending the Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival again next year!
